Evaluation of Economic Impacts of Potential “Cap and Trade” Carbon  Emission Policies on Catfish, Baitfish, and Crawfish Farming
University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff –
Aquaculture/fisheries Center
Pine Bluff, Arkansas USA

Carbon emission policies are likely to affect the aquaculture industry though

a) increase in input prices (such as, electricity, fuel, and feed),
b) potential abatement and transaction costs for farmers,
c) increase in price of aquaculture products, and d) potential increase in farm revenue from carbon offsets and reduction credits.

Aquaculture
 might be a supplier
of carbon offsets, and fish farmers might earn additional
 income as offset
 credits and allowances.
Responsibilities: Conduct a study using partial
 equilibrium market models
to quantify the economic effects of potential carbon
 emission policies in
the USA by linking both fish farmers and fish buyers. A
 four-step
procedure is expected to be used as follows: 1) development
 of a baseline
model for catfish, bait minnow and crawfish farms; 2)
 estimation of
behavioral systems and parameterization of equations; 3)
 construction of
ex ante impact indicators; 4) analysis of overall impact by
 incorporating
estimated parameters and ex ante impact indicators into
 baseline models.
 Qualifications: B.S. in aquaculture, fisheries,
 agricultural economics or
related field, minimum GPA of 3.0, and GRE score of 1,000+
 (verbal +
quantitative). Minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 79 or IELTS
 score of 6.5 for
international students. Strong background in economics,
 quantitative
analysis, and spreadsheet modeling is preferred.

 Assistantship: Year 1
 $17,800; Year 2 $18,800. Description of application
 procedure and
necessary forms can be found at the UAPB
 Aquaculture/Fisheries Center
 website, http://www.uaex.edu/aqfi/. Applications will be
 considered until
a candidate is selected (proposed staring date is January
 3, 2011).

Potential Marketing Structures for the Catfish Industry in
 the USA
University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff –
 Aquaculture/fisheries Center
 Pine Bluff, Arkansas USA

There is a lack of comprehensive research that examines
 existing and
potential value chains, and organization and coordination
 of catfish the
marketing system to identify marketing tools that may
 assist U.S. catfish
farmers to compete in an increasingly concentrated food
 market. Such
researches are of paramount importance in designing viable
 strategies
(production as well as marketing) to make the U.S. catfish
 industry
competitive with other products (domestic as well as
 imported).

Responsibilities: Conduct studies to: i) identify and characterize forms of market organization (including ownership and control of the processing/packing function) that have the greatest likelihood of success for the U.S. farm-raised catfish industry; and ii) develop comprehensive economic analyses to evaluate likely impacts on the U.S. farm-raised catfish industry of implementing proposed structures.

Qualifications: B.S. in aquaculture, fisheries, agricultural economics or related field, minimum GPA of 3.0, and GRE score of 1,000+ (verbal +
 quantitative).

Minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 79 or IELTS score of 6.5 for international students. Strong background in economics and quantitative analysis is preferred. Assistantship: Year 1 $17,800; Year 2 $18,800.
