THE ATSE CRAWFORD FUND FELLOWSHIP (2009)

Terms and Conditions

Title:  The Fellowship shall be known as ‘The ATSE Crawford Fund Fellowship’

Aim:  The aim of the Fellowship is to provide further training to a scientist from a developing country whose work in the field of agriculture, fisheries, forestry or environmental protection has shown significant potential.  The training shall take place at an Australian agricultural institution and the training will emphasize the application of knowledge to increased agricultural production in the Fellow’s home country.

The Fellowship:  The successful recipient shall spend up to three months at an Australian institution receiving further training in an aspect of agricultural research or resource development.  The training shall have relevance to the needs of the recipient’s home country and the benefits that may accrue from the award of the Fellowship. 

Eligibility:  The Fellowship is open to citizens of selected developing countries.  In 2008 the countries selected are set out in the Schedule below. The nominated countries may change with time. Nominees will be actively engaged in the practice of some aspect of agricultural research or extension and may be undertaking formal postgraduate study.  The successful recipient will be below the age of 35 years on January 1^st in the year of the Fellowship Award.

Frequency of the Award:  The Fellowship shall be offered annually and shall not be offered if in the opinion of the selection committee no suitably qualified candidate is available.

Entitlements and Responsibilities of the Recipient: The Recipient shall be entitled to a return economy airfare to and from Australia, graduate student standard accommodation and subsistence during the tenure of the Fellowship and comprehensive medical insurance for the period of the Fellowship. The Recipient shall be required to return to his/her home country at the end of the Fellowship.  The Recipient shall be required to submit to the Executive Director, The ATSE Crawford Fund, within one month of completing the Fellowship, a written report summarizing the training activities undertaken, and indicating potential benefits from the training to the Recipient’s home country including an outline of plans for applying the knowledge gained in the Recipient’s home country to increase agricultural production.  The Recipient should also comment on aspects of the Fellowship that may benefit future Recipients.

Nominations:  Nominations for the award should be made by at least two persons with experience in agriculture and who have a good knowledge of the nominee’s background. The nominations must include the nominee’s full name and title, communication details, education qualifications, and professional experience.  Any special aspects to the advantage of the candidate should be included.  The nominators should provide evidence indicating the nominee’s fluency in English.  The first proposer must be an Australian citizen.  The second proposer should be the Officer-in-Charge of the nominee’s Institute, Department, etc.  Nominations are confidential.  Nominations must be made on the application form obtainable from The ATSE Crawford Fund Central Office, 1 Leonard Street, Parkville, 3052 Victoria Australia.  Nominations must be received at The ATSE Crawford Fund Central Office by the closing date given on the application form.  Late nominations will not be accepted.

Selection Committee:  A Selection Committee comprising the Director (General Training) and two other persons appointed by The Executive Committee of The Crawford Fund Board of Governors shall be set up.  This selection committee shall consider all nominations and make a recommendation for endorsement by the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors.  The Selection Committee shall be free to seek assistance in determining the relative merits of nominees.

The successful nominee shall be notified by letter signed by the Chairman of The Board of Governors of The Crawford Fund.

Guidelines for the Selection Committee:  In determining the successful nominee, the selection committee shall take into account the candidate’s professional history and experience, and the impact of his/her contributions in the application of research and development in agriculture in a developing country or countries. This impact should be identified where possible in terms of benefits to agricultural production.  Preference shall be given to applicants who have not previously accepted a similar award.

*Schedule.  In 2009, the recipient of the Fellowship will be selected from nominee who are citizens or who are working in the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, Cambodia, East Timor, Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Is, Tonga, Tuvalu and Kirabati, Vanuatu, Viet-Nam.
